Exciting times: Receiving mushroom specimens to identify!
This week we received a large set of specimens from a very active and knowledgeable citizen scientist. Some of the samples had tentative names, and for others no one has a clue. Our job is to look at these specimens closely (like really close, under the microscope) and to DNA barcode them. We are hoping that the DNA barcodes will help us get a better idea of their identities. However, sequencing fungi are not usually a clear answer, because the groups the fungus belong to has not been sorted out or changed dramatically, or our fungi simply are not identical to something with a sequence. But with the morphology and DNA sequences, we can go ahead towards a more informed identification, or describe it!
